I Spilled Water on My Laptop – What to Do Immediately (And What Not to Do)

It’s the tech nightmare we all dread. A knocked-over glass of water, a tipped cup of coffee, or a splash of wine straight across your laptop keyboard.

When liquid hits electronics, the clock is ticking. What you do in the first five minutes will completely dictate whether your laptop survives or becomes an expensive paperweight. At LaunchLayer, I’ve saved countless liquid-damaged laptops across Wickford and Essex.

If you’ve just had a spill, stop panicking and follow these emergency steps exactly.

Step 1: Kill the Power IMMEDIATELY

Water doesn't actually kill computers—short circuits do. When liquid connects two electrical points on your motherboard that shouldn't be connected, the board fries.

  • Unplug the charger from the wall immediately.

  • Force shut down. Do not wait for Windows to safely shut down. Press and hold the power button for 5 to 10 seconds until the screen goes completely black.

  • Remove the battery (if your laptop has a removable battery clip on the bottom). If the battery is internal, do not waste time trying to unscrew the case right now.

Step 2: Unplug All Peripherals

Remove everything connected to the laptop. Unplug your USB mouse, external hard drives, HDMI cables, and flash drives. This prevents the short circuit from travelling down the cables and destroying your external devices.

Step 3: The "Tent" Position

You need to get the liquid away from the delicate motherboard sitting under the keyboard.

  • Open the laptop as wide as the hinges allow.

  • Place a highly absorbent microfiber cloth or a thick towel flat on a table.

  • Turn the laptop upside down and place it on the towel in an upside-down "V" (tent) shape. This allows gravity to pull the liquid back out through the keyboard rather than letting it seep deeper into the internal components.

Step 4: What You Must NEVER Do (The Myths)

There is a lot of terrible advice on the internet regarding water damage. Doing any of the following will almost guarantee your laptop dies:

  • DO NOT use a hairdryer or radiator. Heat will melt the plastic keys, warp the chassis, and push the water deeper into the micro-components.

  • DO NOT put it in rice. This is the biggest myth in tech. Rice does not absorb water from inside a sealed laptop chassis. Instead, the starchy dust from the rice gets into the cooling fans and USB ports, turning into a sticky paste when it hits the moisture.

  • DO NOT turn it back on to "check if it works." Even if it looks dry on the outside, water gets trapped underneath the microscopic chips on the motherboard. Turning it on while damp will instantly fry the board. Laptops need at least 48 to 72 hours to dry out.

Step 5: What About Coffee, Tea, or Wine?

If you spilled pure water, you have a high chance of survival if you let it dry completely.

However, if you spilled coffee, tea, wine, or fizzy drinks, you have a much bigger problem. When these liquids evaporate, they leave behind sticky, acidic residue and minerals. Even if the laptop works tomorrow, that residue will begin to corrode and eat away at the copper traces on the motherboard over the next few weeks, eventually killing the machine permanently.

Get Professional Help Fast
