Is Your Smart Doorbell Slowing Down Your Wi-Fi? (And Is It Safe?)
From smart lights and thermostats to video doorbells and security cameras, our homes in Wickford and Basildon are becoming more connected every day. By 2026, nearly half of all UK households are projected to use smart home products.
However, many residents don't realize that these "convenient" devices can actually compromise your online security and clog up your Wi-Fi signal. At LaunchLayer, I’m helping local families audit their smart homes to ensure they are both fast and secure.
1. Why Your Smart Home Might Be Slowing You Down
Every smart device you add to your home is like adding another car to a busy motorway. Even if they aren't "doing anything," they are constantly sending small updates back to their manufacturers.
The "Bandwidth Hog" Alert: A single 1080p security camera can use up to 4 Mbps of your upload speed. If you have three or four cameras running, they can easily "choke" your connection, leading to laggy video calls and buffering.
The 2.4GHz Traffic Jam: Most older or budget smart devices only use the 2.4GHz frequency. This band is already crowded with baby monitors, microwaves, and your neighbours' Wi-Fi, leading to constant interference.
2. The "Digital Backdoor": Is Your Kettle a Security Risk?
Hackers rarely target your PC directly anymore; instead, they look for the weakest link in your network—often a smart plug or a cheap security camera with its default factory password still active.
The Risk: Once a hacker gains access to a single smart bulb, they can often "jump" across your network to access your laptop, where your banking and personal data are stored.
The 2026 Fix: In the UK, new laws now require manufacturers to provide regular security updates and ban easy-to-guess passwords. If your smart device is more than a few years old, it might be "out of support" and acting as a major security hole.
3. Three Ways to Secure and Speed Up Your Network
Create a "Guest" Network: The simplest pro-tip is to move all your smart devices onto your router’s Guest Network. This creates a "digital wall" that prevents a compromised smart bulb from reaching your main computers and phones.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): If your smart camera app offers 2FA, turn it on. This ensures that even if a hacker guesses your password, they can't see inside your home without a code from your phone.
Hardwire High-Traffic Devices: If your smart TV or gaming console is near your router, use an Ethernet cable. Taking these "heavy" devices off the Wi-Fi frees up more airtime for your wireless gadgets.
