Is Your PC Ready for 2026? The Truth About "AI PCs" and Your Privacy

By now, you’ve probably noticed "Copilot" or other AI tools popping up on your Windows taskbar. In 2026, Microsoft and other manufacturers are moving from "testing" AI to making it a core part of how your computer works.

But there is a lot of confusion. Do you need a new computer to use AI? Is it safe? At LaunchLayer, I’m helping local residents in Wickford understand what these changes mean for their hardware and their data.

1. What is an "AI PC" anyway?

You might hear terms like "NPU" or "TOPS" being thrown around by retailers. Simply put, new computers are being built with a specific chip (the Neural Processing Unit) designed to handle AI tasks without slowing down your main processor.

  • The Reality: You don’t need a new PC to use most AI tools today, but without an NPU, these features might make your laptop run hot or drain your battery faster.

  • My Advice: Before you spend £1,000 on an "AI-branded" laptop, bring your current machine to me for a 2026 Performance Check. Often, a simple RAM upgrade is all you need to keep up with modern software.

2. The Privacy Gap: Is AI Watching You?

The biggest concern I hear in the workshop is about privacy. Many AI models "train" on the data you provide.

  • The Risk: If not configured correctly, AI tools could be indexing your private documents or even tracking your screen activity to "help" you.
